4 Ways the Holiday Season Affects Your Skin

Posted on: December 1st, 2017 by California Skin Institute

The holidays are an enjoyable time of giving, family and celebration. In fact, many of us look forward to the holiday season all year long. However, all the merry festivities don’t come stress-free. The hustle and bustle of the season can take a toll on our overall health, and subsequently on the appearance of our skin as well. It’s no secret that stress can wreak havoc on skin, but this time of year brings along its own specific challenges. Between parties, hosting family, traveling and gift-buying, it’s hard to find the extra time for self-care. Fortunately, there are simple strategies you can put in place to ensure you enjoy the holiday fun while keeping your skin and body balanced.

Check out the following solutions to four big holiday season stressors and keep your skin glowing all season long.

Cooler Temperatures Dry Out Skin

Harsh weather and cool air during the holiday season can dry skin out by causing more water to be evaporated through the skin. It’s also common to drink less water throughout the day when it’s cold out, further compounding the issue. Since staying properly hydrated is essential for healthy skin and a healthy body, make it a point to drink plenty of fluids throughout the busy holiday season.

Carry a reusable water bottle to remind you to drink up. This is especially important if you’re out and about shopping and running errands. Also, be sure to use a good moisturizer to keep skin plump and hydrated from the outside.*

Seasonal Shopping Increases Stress

There’s nothing like the joy of gifting to loved ones during the holidays. But let’s be honest, a trip to the mall in December is no picnic. Between fighting for parking, battling the crowds and searching for the perfect gift, stress levels can escalate quickly. Tackling your holiday list doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Take a break by booking a mid-day facial.

Another great way to keep stress at bay while shopping is to avoid skipping meals. Stay away from unhealthy mall snacks and stay hydrated when you’re out and about. Being too hungry or consuming sugary foods can lead to bad eating decisions later in the day, both of which are less than ideal for your skin.

Holiday Party Planning Leads to Dull Skin & Breakouts

Being the holiday host or hostess can take a lot out of you with all the party planning, coordination and careful execution of every last detail. Late nights, sugary foods and drinks in addition to the stress of hosting can cause your skin to look less than ideal.

Don’t let dull skin or a bad breakout ruin all your party planning efforts. Begin to prep your party face at least a week in advance with a glycolic acid peel or Microdermabrasion to reveal rejuvenated and radiant skin.*

Putting Yourself Last Runs You Down

Parents in particular know how easy it is to put their own needs at the bottom of the list. Unfortunately, neglecting self-care is something we are all guilty of, especially around the holidays when our to-do lists are a mile long. Travel plans, hosting get-togethers and getting everything done can mean skimping on sleep, and on the simple pleasures that help us recharge.

Do your best to stay physically active throughout the end of the year and get enough rest each night. You’ll not only feel better for the celebrations, but your skin will look better too!
