Dermal Fillers: Thick to Thin

Posted on: February 1st, 2017 by California Skin Institute

When it comes to dermal fillers, many California Skin Institute patients are surprised to learn just how versatile the treatments can be.* Today, your CSI provider can use a wide range of filler treatments to address everything from facial volume loss, to reducing fine lines and wrinkles in a nuanced way that produces natural outcomes.*

There is good reason for this wide range of options; dermal fillers have become increasingly specialized, giving your provider more options for fine-tuning the treatment to your unique needs.* Let’s take a closer look at what’s driving these exciting innovations and what it means for you.

The Changing Landscape of Dermal Fillers

Over the last decade or so, the thickness and consistency of dermal fillers has expanded greatly. For example, today there are a number of fillers (like Restylane Silk and Juvederm Ultra) which are formulated specifically for treating lip wrinkles in a subtle way that creates a natural appearance.*

At the same time, a patient can improve cheek contour with a thicker filler, like Juvederm Voluma.* Let’s take a closer look at some of the more popular fillers and how their versatility can be used to your advantage.

Dermal Fillers for Facial Volume Loss

When it comes to treating facial volume loss (like sagging cheeks, for example), your provider can suggest a number of fillers well-suited for this purpose.* These typically have a thicker gel consistency that can provide effective support for the cheeks and even earlobes.* Some of these fillers include:

  • Juvederm Voluma:  Developed primarily for injection into the cheeks, this filler can improve facial volume and contours.*
  • Radiesse:  This filler relies primarily on Calcium Hydroxylapatite microspheres to produce volumizing outcomes.* What is interesting about Radiesse is that it provides immediate improvement as the gel increases volume under the skin, and also produces long term improvement by stimulating collagen growth.*
  • Sculptra The primary driving force behind this filler is collagen growth, which is stimulated by the poly-L-lactic acid in the formulation.* As such, this filler can be used to create naturally-full improvements in the temples as well as mid-face.*
  • Restylane Lyft:  This filler from the Restylane family of injectables also relies on hyaluronic acid to add volume in the face.* Though Restylane Lyft was primarily developed for enhancing volume in the cheeks, it can be used to add contour to other parts of the face as well.*

Dermal Fillers for Lips

Treating lip wrinkles and loss of volume in the lips requires a very careful approach. The skin on this area is quite thin, which makes it imperative that improvements don’t just look great but to also feel natural.* Therefore, this are often requires a much thinner dermal filler.*

  • Restylane Silk:  This dermal filler was formulated by Galderma specifically for lip injections.* The thin gel consistency means that the improvements are subtle and allow lip movement to look natural (a thicker gel can make the lips look too static and “plastic”).*
  • Volbella:  This dermal filler is part of the Juvederm family of injectables. Unlike Juvederm Voluma, however, Volbella has a much thinner texture.* These properties make it a great choice for use in treating lip wrinkles.*

Dermal Fillers for Nasolabial Folds

Nasolabial folds are those lines that run from the corners of the nose to the corners of the lips. They are the combined results of collagen loss in the skin and repeated facial movements. Unfortunately, these relatively small lines can create unflattering shadows in the face, thus exacerbating their visibility.

  • Belotero:  Formulated with hyaluronic acid, Belotero can be used to treat moderate to severe wrinkles, including nasolabial folds.* This injectable produces immediate improvements by adding volume to the area, and maintains the improvement by drawing moisture to the treatment site.*
  • Restylane Refyne and Defyne:  Both of these fillers from Restylane can be used to reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds.* They are both formulated with hyaluronic acid, with a difference in how the molecules are cross-linked (Refyne focuses on flexibility, while Defyne focuses on providing support).*
  • Sculptra:  By stimulating collagen production, Sculptra gradually increases support in the area to reduce the visibility of nasolabial folds.*

Dermal Fillers for Hands

Although dermal fillers are strongly associated with facial anti aging treatments, they can also be used to enhance the appearance of your hands.* After all, volume loss doesn’t just occur in the face. The hands also tend to lose fatty tissue, which gives the bones and veins a more pronounced appearance.

Dermal fillers like Radiesse can be used to create a more aesthetically-pleasing appearance by increasing volume in key parts of the hand.*
