Excessive Sweating Treatments

Posted on: May 31st, 2016 by California Skin Institute

California Skin Institute providers have helped many patients get excessive sweating under control, and can use a number of technologies to treat this problem.* Also known as hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating is a very frustrating problem for men and women alike, and can even feel like it’s running your life. We have heard many stories from patients who’ve kept an extra set of shirts or blouses at work, resorted to wearing only dark colors to mask sweat stains, and even avoided social situations because of feelings of embarrassment. For many patients, the control that excessive sweating had over their lives simply became too big a burden – always in the back of their minds and dictating their life choices.

The good news is that hyperhidrosis doesn’t have to control your life.* The expert providers at California Skin Institute can administer several treatment options that can significantly reduce excessive sweating.*

What Causes Excessive Sweating

Excessive sweating can have a variety of causes, including underlying health conditions like diabetes and hormonal shifts. If the hyperhidrosis is a symptom of a health condition, it’s important to address the underlying cause first, as that may reduce the excessive sweating.

However, in many individuals, hyperhidrosis is not a manifestation of a more serious problem and therefore must be treated directly.* In many such cases, the sweating can occur on the feet and palms, but the underarms are typically the predominant area for which patients seek treatment.*

Botox for Sweating (Temporary Solution)

One way to address excessive underarm sweating is through Botox injections.* Most people have come to know Botox as a wrinkle treatment, but the same neuromodulating effects that relax facial muscles to reduce wrinkles can also reduce sweat gland function.*

Currently, Botox treatments for sweating are only approved for treatment of underarm sweating.* Through a series of virtually-painless injections, the communication between sweat glands and the surrounding nerves is reduced, thus leading to a decrease in sweat production.*

However, although Botox for excessive sweating is a temporary solution.*

MiraDry for Excessive Sweating

To treat excessive sweat in the long term, California Skin Institute providers can use a new technology called MiraDry.* This device is currently cleared by the FDA specifically for treating underarm sweat, and is not used on other parts of the body.*

MiraDry works by delivering pulses of electromagnetic energy to the armpits. This damages the sweat glands, reducing excessive sweating in the area.*

During a typical appointment, a California Skin Institute provider will ask you to lie down on the procedure table, and will inject local anesthetic into the treatment area. Then, the MiraDry hand piece will be used to deliver energy bursts to the skin. After all segments of the underarms have been treated, you will be asked to apply an icepack to the area, to reduce swelling and any discomfort.*

This procedure is quite comfortable, and most patients are able to return to work the same day.*

After the procedure has been completed, you may notice swelling and some discomfort in the armpits for the next few weeks. This happens as the body heals the treatment site.*

As an added benefit, MiraDry also has a damaging effect on the hair follicles during treatment, and can significantly reduce underarm hair, for easier hygienic maintenance.*
