Neck Contouring with Kybella Treatments

Posted on: January 4th, 2016 by California Skin Institute

When it comes to minimally invasive fat removal, Kybella double chin injections have become a popular choice for many California Skin Institute patients in recent months.* Although this treatment was just approved by the FDA in April 2015, the news of these injections has quickly spread through media outlets all over the country. Why is it so popular? Because Kybella is a revolutionary procedure that targets fat under the chin through a series of injection sessions.* There is no down time, and no visible signs that any treatment was performed at all.* Further, the fat reduction at the treatment site is gradual, making it difficult for anyone to figure out that you’ve had work done.*

But let’s take a deeper look at Kybella treatments, to see how the process works and what you can expect.*

The Importance of Contour

The basic idea behind Kybella treatments is to provide contour to the neck.* Often, even a small amount of submental fat (double chin) can drastically affect the contours of the neck, disrupting the elegant transition point at the jaw.* This can make an individual look older than they really are, and even create an unhealthy appearance.*

Unfortunately, submental fat can be difficult to lose without cosmetic treatments. Diet and exercise are often not enough because fat isn’t lost uniformly throughout the body. Further, for some individuals an extreme workout plan isn’t an option due to physical injury.

How Kybella Works

The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid. When the injections are administered into the fat deposits under the chin, the deoxycholic acid damages the fat cells.* The lymphatic system then gradually removes the damaged cells from the body, and reduces the overall size of the double chin.*

Typically, a series of several Kybella treatments are performed in intervals of several weeks.* This allows time for the fat cells to be broken down, and for the fat deposits to shrink.* With every successive treatment session the remaining fat will continue to be targeted until an aesthetically pleasing outcome has been achieved.*

There is no down time associated with this treatment, and many California Skin Institute patients get this procedure during their lunch breaks.*

Who is a Candidate for Kybella Treatments?

The best candidates for Kybella treatments are patients who adhere to a healthy lifestyle but simply can’t lose their double chin because it is hard to target through diet and exercise. As such, the best outcomes are achieved in cases of a small or moderate double chin.*

However, it’s important to note that Kybella cannot treat sagging skin. Certainly, some skin tightening effect is possible with this treatment once the fat has been destroyed, but this occurs in patients who already have strong skin elasticity.* If a patient is suffering from sagging skin in the area, the injections will not be able to address this issue, and other treatments like Ulthera or Thermage may be needed to tighten skin by boosting collagen production.*

Further, Kybella treatments also will not address vertical muscle bands. These form when the edges of the platysma muscle become visible, which can significantly distort contour of the neck. For these situations, a face or neck lift may be needed in order to smooth out the muscle edges.*

Taking the First Step

Although Kybella can achieve powerful improvements, it has to be administered by a well-trained provider who has a deep understanding of how deoxycholic acid works and how it will affect the contours of the neck.* The providers at California Skin Institute understand this procedure very well, with Dr. Greg Morganroth even acting as one of the first national trainers for Kybella.*
