Ultherapy for Wrinkles

Posted on: November 20th, 2015 by California Skin Institute

To help patients tighten skin on the face and neck, California Skin Institute providers may suggest Ultherapy treatments, which can achieve dramatic improvements after just one session.* This revolutionary treatment option has become a popular solution for many patients because it involves no surgery, no injections, and only takes about one hour to perform.* For some patients, Ultherapy can be combined with injectables, like neuromodulators and fillers, for dramatic outcomes that bring more contour and balance to the face.* To schedule your personalized Ultherapy consultation, please call a California Skin Institute practice near you, or schedule your appointment online.*

How Wrinkles and Sagging Skin Form

To better understand how Ultherapy works, it’s important to first discuss the driving force behind the formation of wrinkles, and the sagging of facial and neck skin.

Our skin may look simple to the naked eye, but upon closer examination, it’s a very complex structure that protects our bodies by keeping out pathogens (like viruses and bacteria), protecting the loss of vital moisture by creating a physical barrier, and reducing the effects of UV radiation on your vital organs, among many other functions. And just like your heart, liver or lungs, the skin is a vital organ – in fact, it’s the largest organ of your body.

With time, however, your skin begins to lose its resiliency. The constant exposure to UV radiation, lack of proper moisture, gravity, and the gradual loss of collagen all manifest in the form of wrinkles and sagging skin.

The loss of collagen is one of the biggest causes of this problem. Collagen protein fibers are at the core of the skin’s support structure, creating a physical network that keeps the skin tight. As we age, however, the body produces less of this protein causing the skin to lose elasticity.

How Ultherapy Works

Ultherapy is a specialized treatment approach that uses ultrasound waves to stimulate the production of collagen by heating the skin.* Over time, this process causes the skin to create more collagen fibers, which strengthen the support network, and thus reduce wrinkles and tighten skin.*

Ultherapy is a very versatile option that can target a variety of issues including*:

  • Frown Lines: By building up collagen in the forehead and between the eyebrows, Ultherapy can reduce the appearance of frown lines by making the skin more resilient.*
  • Neck Fat: Ultherapy can reduce the appearance of neck fat by making the skin stronger, so that the skin can better withstand the weight of the fat around the jaw.* In fact, many California Skin Institute patients say that their face looks slimmer after treatment.*
  • Jowls: Ultherapy can be very effective for treating jowls without surgery.* Tightening the skin in the area typically gives the appearance of an overall lift.*
  • Facial Volume Loss: One of the hallmarks of an aging face is the loss of volume which changes facial contour.* By strengthening the collagen network in the skin, Ultherapy can bring more contour and definition to the face.*

What to Expect During Ultherapy Treatment

Ultherapy treatment is completely non-invasive, and requires no surgical intervention of any kind.* During your appointment at California Skin Institute, your provider will talk to you about your goals and make a careful assessment of your skin and facial structure.*

When treatment begins, the Ultherapy device will be guided along the treatment area, and short bursts of ultrasound waves will be delivered under the skin.*

The treatment lasts between 30-60 minutes (depending on the size of the treatment area), and causes only mild discomfort.* Most California Skin Institute patients describe Ultherapy as a mild sensation that stings and feels hot at the same time.* However, this sensation only occurs when the ultrasound waves penetrate the skin, and there is no pain or discomfort after treatment.*
